5 tips for improving your footwork in volleyball

02/24/2025 |

Good footwork is essential in volleyball. It determines whether you can reach the ball in time for a perfect pass, set, or attack. Here are five tips to improve your footwork and take your game to the next level!

1. Work on your reaction time

It all starts with a quick reaction. Make sure you always stand in a slight squat position on the balls of your feet. This helps you move explosively in any direction. Practice your reaction time with short sprints from a neutral position. A good drill for this is the reaction sprint: have a teammate randomly point left or right and sprint as fast as you can in that direction.

2. Use small, quick steps

Big steps cost time and balance. Focus on small, quick steps to adjust your position. This is especially important for passers and setters who need precise positioning. An effective exercise for this is the ladder drill. Set up an agility ladder and perform various footwork patterns like the “in-and-out” or lateral movements. This increases your speed and agility.

3. Practice lateral movements

In volleyball, you often need to move sideways, for example, to receive a pass or block a ball. Shuffles are perfect for this. Make sure to stay low and never cross your feet. Try the lateral shuffle drill: set up two cones three meters apart and move quickly from one to the other without crossing your legs.

4. Strengthen your core for balance

Good footwork requires a strong core for balance and stability. Add exercises like planks, Russian twists, and mountain climbers to your training routine. A strong core helps you change direction quickly without losing balance, especially during defensive plays.

5. Combine footwork with ball control

It’s one thing to move quickly, but you also need to stay in control while playing the ball. Practice footwork combined with volleyball techniques. A good exercise is the moving pass drill: have someone hit the ball to different spots on the court and focus on quick footwork to make accurate passes. Check out more volleyball footwork drills.

The importance of footwork in volleyball

Good footwork makes the difference between being just on time or too late for the ball. By working on your reaction time, speed, lateral movements, core strength, and combining footwork with ball control, you’ll significantly improve your game.
